Fewer things can make you feel better when you’re under the weather than cool mountain air; fresh ‘crisp’, tasting water and scenic landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. In mid January, in need of some R-n-R after a nasty bout of God-knows-what in my system, I spent a restful weekend away at Sandford Park Country Hotel, Bergville, in the Southern ‘Berg.
Unable to resist a good bargain, I spotted a deal on Groupon for a two night stay including breakfast and dinner at R2 649. Looking forward to the break, I was amped! The sporadic wifi and cell phone network coverage in the Drakensberg forces you to disconnect for a bit as well, which I needed…..
It was a comfortable three-hour drive from Durban, with fair roads and just a little bit of a gravel path just before reaching Sandford Park.
Make no mistake – Sandford Park is a well equipped, clean, and absolutely stunning establishment.
The modern suites have been newly renovated but if you prefer a more rustic looking cabin there are thatched roof units available as well.
The lawns are in excellent condition; the pool is clean and inviting; the staff are exceptionally warm and friendly.
As with most ‘Berg getaways, you will notice that everything is at least 45 minutes to an hours drive apart, so it’s best to ensure that your little slice of mountain real estate has enough to keep you entertained.
On-Site Activities at Sandford include:
Dam: boating and bass-fishing
Board games available in the lounge and bar area
Sigh, to me, the food, while served in ample portions, simply did not taste good. I was absolutely disappointed. The ingredients were fresh, but it’s like they just don’t know how to cook!
I didn’t even bother to take photographs.
They served ox-tail on Friday night (it was served in a blackish “stew-like” substance and tasted like vinegar soup.) The meals that followed were not much of an upgrade but they slightly redeemed themselves on Saturday night with a prawn and chicken curry.)
BUT, every cloud has a silver lining – and as far as food goes, I was in for a treat….
You can imagine how grateful I was when, on the recommendation of another couple at Sandford, we stopped at The Tower of Pizza (see what they did there?!), for lunch.
It was a wonderful Saturday lunch and I would highly recommend you stop here, irrespective of where you’re staying in the ‘Berg.
Ample toppings, soft, stringy, delicious mozzarella, crispy thin base (I don’t do deep dish), succulent chicken out of a wood fire oven – Heaven!
I also explored a bit and stopped at Little Switzerland. Take a look at these snaps. I found it stunning! There were two Zebra wandering about as well.. too cute haha 🙂
Overall my weekend was brilliant – the only downer being the food that didn’t quite hit the spot for me. I won’t return to Sandford and I hope they up their game. No amount of breathtaking views can satisfy a palette eager for deliciousness!
Such a pity.. it really is a little slice of mountain heaven.
Here are a few more shots of the stunning landscape..
