Last Friday an old friend and I treated ourselves to an evening under the stars. A picnic and an open air night screening of Despicable Me courtesy of Hirsch’s Homestores in Umhlanga Rocks Drive and their I Love Durban North Night Theatre Market.
Their concept that is TOO TOO EPIC not to share! In fact, it is such a wonderful idea that I contemplated not mentioning it to Doing Durbaners to savour the just-right-crowd-numbers a wee bit longer! (Settle down… settle down… that feeling only lasted for a second or so and I’m here to reveal all… 🙂 ).
Entry is free; there are ample food stalls to tantalise every palette. Flavours galore such as bunny-chows from Some Like It Hot; caffeine fixes from the Coffee Guyz; tantalising Asian cuisine from A Taste of Thai; Falaffel Fundi and a lovely lady who’s stall name I didn’t get but she made babotie. There were a few other stalls too, selling popcorn, candy floss, and other movie night essentialia.)
The crowd was peaceful and the movie started promptly at 6.30pm. I advise you to get there early to secure a good parking spot and a piece of prime real estate in front of the giant inflatable screen to ensure optimum cinematic enjoyment!
The focus is on building up the park into a place for families to gather at on Friday evenings for some fun time together. They also sell lucky-draw tickets and the funds raised go towards maintaining the park itself.
It really is wonderful, just what Durban needed. There is an open air night theatre in Kloof but that’s a bit of a drive hey.
There were Minions at the screening as well! Too too cool! (Banana!)
In any event, THE LION KING is the next screening.
Who doesn’t love the Lion King?? Gather your kids Boys and Girls – you can pretend that you’re treating them to a night out but we know that you also want to re-live your childhood memories with Simba!
(Full Disclosure: As a child, I cried when Mufasa died and at age 28 Lord knows I’ll cry again. Every.Single.Time. Scar you bastard!)
You can carry your own picnic baskets and beverages. I suggest taking a picnic blanket along as well as some of the grassy patches are thin and sitting on red sand isn’t kind to the jeans. The next show is in September and the nights ought to be warmer by then, but just incase, carry a jacket.
I’m taking pillows next time! Some people carried camp chairs which could also work.
The friend and I are in agreement – one of the most perfect date night ideas right here! Never underestimate the value of simplicity …. 🙂
So there you go!
